At over 6,000 km² Banff National Park is one of the most visited areas in Canada, with people drawn to the rugged mountains and stunning glacial lakes. It is a landscape photographer’s dream and the wildlife sightings can be me among the finest in the country. The town of Banff is the ideal place to base yourself for any time to explore this beautiful protected area. Sought-after wildlife includes both grizzly and black bear, wolf, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, elk, moose, Canada lynx, cougar and the Columbia ground squirrel.
When to Go
The park is a wonderful place to visit throughout the year, but each season definitely provides opportunities for people with different interests:
November through to February is the height of winter, the perfect time for those looking for a winter wonderland. Heavy snowfall makes this one of the most beautiful places to explore and if you are partial to winter sports or are an avid climber, now is the perfect time to head to Banff National Park. Many of the species that spend the summers at higher altitudes descend in to the valleys and can provide excellent views.
March to May is spring in the mountains. March and most of April are still likely to be snowy and cold, but as the days lengthen then snow starts to melt and spring is on its way - the lower the altitude the earlier spring arrives in the Rockies. In May, spring really starts to take hold and nature springs to life across the mountains.
June to August is summer in Banff National Park and is when the majority of visitors arrive to enjoy the natural splendour. Wildlife abounds during the summer months and more areas of the park are accessible as the snow has mostly melted. This is a fantastic time in particular to see grizzly bears and their cubs as they explore the slopes for food. Bird life abounds and wildlife is making the most of the plentiful food. Popular areas can be busy, but with more of the park accessible, the more adventurous travellers can enjoy spectacular hikes and climbs.
September and October are one of our favourite times to enjoy the wildlife and scenery of Banff National Park. It is autumn (fall) and the park is arguably at its most beautiful, with the vegetation changing and the shorter days providing some of the most spectacular light. Visitor numbers are lower and you can still enjoy some spectacular wildlife encounters as life is busy preparing for the tough winter ahead.
